Oct. 14 marks the anniversary date of Secretariat's controversial 1972 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park. After easily finishing first in the race, the NYRA stewards determined that Secretariat should be disqualified for interference. It was an unpopular decision then, and remains so for Big Red fans more than a half century later.
